How do you run an Emmy pool?

What’s different about an Emmy pool?
Television. Where an Oscar ballot is one movie universe, the Emmy ballot is three parallel ones: drama, comedy, and limited series each get their own program, acting, and craft races. That structure rewards genre specialists: the friend who watched every hourlong prestige drama is suddenly guessing blind in the comedy half, and vice versa. Nobody has watched everything. Not since the era when a whole country tuned in to the same living-room sitcom has one viewer had the full picture, and that leveling is exactly what makes the pool fun.

There’s a calendar quirk worth exploiting, too: the Emmys open awards season. How should you score 22 categories?

The fix is weighting: make the three series categories and the lead acting races worth 3 points, supporting and directing 2, and everything else 1. A bold Best Drama call should outrank a lucky animation guess: that’s the difference between a pool with a story arc and a pool that’s just a quiz.

Which Emmy categories are predictable?

When do ballots need to be in?
Before the broadcast starts on Mon, Sep 14, 2026 · 8pm ET. That’s the hard rule: once the first envelope opens, the ballot box is sealed, no take-backs. If your group is scattered across time zones, collect asynchronously through the week and lock everything at airtime; a pool run over one shared link handles stragglers better than a stack of paper ever will. Appointment television only happens a few nights a year now. Treat the deadline with the respect of a finale you can’t let the internet spoil.
One scheduling footnote: the Creative Arts ceremonies happen the weekend before the main telecast, and a few of those results can hint at momentum. If you want a spoiler-free pool, set your deadline before that weekend; if you want a research-friendly one, lock at airtime and let the diligent players mine the early results. Both are legitimate. Just write the choice into the rules so nobody discovers it mid-broadcast.
