It was previously known as Best Regional Mexican or Tejano Album, then Best Regional Mexican Music Album (including Tejano).

It began in 2012 as a merger of the regional Mexican and Tejano awards, absorbed the banda and norteño award a year later, and took its current name at the 2024 ceremony.

It took over from Best Regional Mexican Album, Best Tejano Album and Best Banda or Norteño Album.
